Working on Revisions

I “finished” my book with the first draft right at the end of the year, reaching my goal of at least 65,000 words and a complete beginning, middle, and end. Now, I have given myself the goal of completing major revisions by the end of January. The revisions include things like gutting and writing a new prologue, adding three chapters to help fill in some gaps, naming and renaming characters and places, fixing a couple major plot holes, and trying to pin down my vision for the overarching series.

I set out to write a standalone YA Romantasy retelling of The Little Mermaid, but I feel like it has grown into something else. It’s certainly not a LOTR or a Stormlight Archive, but I am actually considering expanding it into not only a trilogy but a 5 or 6 book series. I like Sanderson’s idea of having two arcs. I am thinking that the “little mermaid” will have one arc across three books. Then, there will be a second arc, possibly a duology instead of a trilogy (because I do not believe in stringing things out just for the sake of having a third book) where the fully empowered Siren goes to war with the gods.

Anyways, it’s not easy. But I need to get going on revisions, so I can start sharing with Beta readers to get more feedback for more revisions. What I thought was going to be a fun project just to get me writing has turned into something more. It’s a bit intimidating. I fear this book will never be done now because I’m suddenly envisioning so much more. But it’s also exhilarating.

I can’t wait to find out what happens 😉
